Bulbs

It’s always a good sign when you see the tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths and crocus starting to bloom. That means its Spring! But you don’t plant these bulbs in spring. To have these bulbs blooming in your spring garden you need to plant them in the fall.

In spring at Dan Schantz Greenhouse we have a large selection of blooming potted bulbs. These are bulbs that we grow in our greenhouses right here in the Lehigh Valley. They add a nice spring touch to your kitchen table, desk at work or on your front porch. Once the blooms have faded, save the bulbs to plant in your garden in the fall. Then you will be able to enjoy them all over again next spring.

Here’s a partial list of the bulbs you should plant in the fall:

Crocus Hyacinth Scilla
Daffodils Iris Snowdrops
Grape Hyacinth Narcissus Tulips

In spring you can plant bulbs that will bloom later in the season. Here’s a partial list of the bulbs you should plant in spring:

Agapanthus Hyacinth Scilla
Anemones Elephant Ears* Peony
Astilbe Gladiolus* Ranunculus
Bloriosa Lilies Sparazis
Calla* Montbretia Sprekelia
Crocosmia Nerine Triteleia

*You may need to lift your bulbs or tubers in the fall and replant in the spring. Shake off any soil and air dry for several days before storing in a cool, dry, well ventilated location. Follow the directions for your specific variety.
