Mother's Day

Mother’s Day Flowers are a special way to honor your mom on Mother’s Day. At Dan Schantz Greenhouse you can do it with a beautiful fresh flower arrangement or with something that will last a little longer. We grow so many different potted flowers that there is sure to be something she will love. There are tulips, daffodils, and pansies, to name a few.

You can also select from our expanded shrubbery section. A flowering shrub like Star® Roses, lilacs, azaleas or forsythia can be planted in her yard and she’ll think of you every time it blooms. Or another great idea is one of our many hanging baskets, Martha Washington Geraniums, Petunias, or a combination basket make a pretty gift.

There’s also our large selection of perennials. A perennial plant is nice because she can plant it in her garden (actually you should do this for her!) and it will come back every year. Whatever type of flower your mom loves is available at Dan Schantz Greenhouse & Cut Flower Outlet.

History of Mom’s Day

In the U.S. Mothers' Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. It is based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and Anna Jarvis in 1907. Although it wasn't celebrated in the U.S. until 1908, there were days honoring mothers even in ancient Greece. In those days it was Rhea, the Mother of the gods who was honored.

In the U.S., in 1908 Ana Jarvis, from Grafton, West Virginia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the anniversary of her mother's death. A memorial service was held there on May 10, 1908. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. In 1914 all her hard work paid off as President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day a national observance that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

Many other countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year. Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, as in the U.S.
