Orchids

All orchids need a to be potted in an airy, quick draining medium like an orchid bark mix. Use a balanced fertilizer at ½ the recommended strength one a week.

Cattleyas and Oncidiums come from the rainforest of South America. They will grow well in an southerly window where they get plenty of sun. They should be thoroughly watered and become dry before the are watered again. If they stay wet, the roots will rot. It is okay to mist the surface roots daily.

Phalaenopsis come from the jungles of southeast Asia. They do best in an east or west window, with no direct sun during midday. They need to be watered every other day, and more often when it is hot and dry.

MIltonias, from the cool and misty cloud forests of South America, grow in the same light as Phalaenopsis. Water them twice a week or more often in hot weather. Try to keep them cool during summer.
